While a more permanent mural is on the agenda for the future, our first mural will be made of light! That is, it will be made via projection art, and, as such, will be on display for a limited time. Graphic designer, Robin Vuchnich of Raleigh, NC, will design and project the art onto the south side of our building this summer. Would you like your name to be included in the mural? Do you want to send a message to a friend or loved one? Have you got something to say to Buxton's northbound traffic? This is the perk for you!
Choose this one and we will include your name in the animated design. If you'd like something written other than just your name, email the info to us at heythere@swellartgallery.com. Messages can be as clever as you'd like, but please keep 'em clean. :)
Are you hesitating to choose this perk because you might not be in town to see the mural in person while it's active? No worries! We will livestream the mural on Facebook and Instagram and save them there so you can share them or watch them anytime you'd like.
Take a look at this example of Robin's light and motion installation at 1 Exchange Plaza in Raleigh for the Illuminate Art Walk. Click or tap the photo to see it animated.
All pottery is handmade by April Trueblood (that's me!) at Kinnakeet Clay Studio in Avon, NC. Everyone who claims one of the pottery perks will receive a signed and personalized item.
All graphic design (T-shirts, sweatshirts, tote bags, stickers, printed mugs) was created in Buxton, NC by Swell Planet Design (that's me!) and the shirts and totes are to be printed by Third Stone Graphics just down the road in Frisco, NC.

Lots of artists and local businesses are donating to this campaign. More perks will be added as the donated items and services come in.
SCRATCHMADE SNACKERY BAKERY PERKS
Like most businesses on Hatteras Island, Scratchmade Snackery is a seasonal business, and not open all year. So keep that in mind when trying to use either of their perk offerings. If you purchase the Bakery Combo Perk, you should contact the bakery 1-2 weeks in advance to order your chocolate mousse as the bakery is EXTREMELY busy from June through the end of August, and wants to be sure to have enough time to make your mousse for you when you're ready to have it.
MASSAGE THERAPY PERKS
Anyone wishing to claim these perks must comply with each company's protocols and standards, and conduct themselves in a manner appropriate for a professional therapeutic environment. Once massage appointments are made, if they must be cancelled, please do so at least 24 hours in advance of the session. Otherwise, the perk will become void. The same goes for no shows.
RAYGUN RUBY HOUSE PARTY
Raygun Ruby can't wait to play for your house party! Or, yard party if COVID-19 is still a thing by the time your party is scheduled. They'll be bringing up to 10 Gingerbread House Bakery pizzas to your place for the party, so you'll be able to coordinate toppings, etc. with them ahead of time if you purchase this perk. Currently, this perk is only available between Southern Shores and Ocracoke, though a less local house party option may be made available soon.
All bookings must be made around the band members' schedules, which are very busy during the summer months.
IN ADDITION, a new development since this campaign was planned is that our beloved guitarist is moving away. That said, this perk should be booked ASAP as we do not know when, exactly, he will be leaving..that will depend on the sale of his home.
All the classes and lessons in this campaign are excellent fun!
SILK PAINTING CLASS
Like the pottery classes, the silk painting classes can be held in the perk-purchaser's local home or rental or in our shop - whichever the purchaser prefers! We'll bring along enough material and supplies for 6 students and the instructor. The classes last approximately 2-3 hours, and we are totally fine with the purchaser making it into a party for their guests/attendees.
You'll create your painted scarves during the class, but they will need to be further processed once your class is over, which we will happily do for you! The colors need to be fixed, resists removed, and the scarves washed and ironed. This will only take 3-4 days at the most. If you don't live nearby, we will be delighted to ship your new scarf to you. Shipping charges will apply and can be taken care of at the time of shipping. Feel free to message us through this platform if you have any questions!
MUSIC LESSONS with LOU CASTRO
There's no way to describe how awesome this guy is. Educated at Berklee School of Music in Boston, he can play pretty much anything with strings in any style. He is a patient and kind teacher, and great with kids as well as adults. If you enjoy these lessons with him and wish to continue, that's totally an option whether you live here or elsewhere. Lou teaches lessons year round in person on Ocracoke Island or via Skype.
PHOTOGRAPHY LESSONS with DON BOWERS
Don has been a professional photographer since 1999. He first picked up a camera during his high school years here on the island in the 1970’s, taking and developing pictures for the school’s folklore magazine “Sea Chest.” His photos have appeared in several local, regional, and national publications, and he was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize in 2012 for his feature photography in The Island Free Press. He has been the IFP staff photographer since its beginning in 2007, and his photos and artwork hang in many businesses here on the island.
Being as knowledgeable of photography as he is makes Donny a great teacher. Plus, he's an all around great guy and a pleasure to learn from.
